Underworld goes underground

Our new name is now Rathskellar...I know it fucking wierd huh? How do you pronounce it?

The short story is it is basically the german word for underground bar and it sort of sounds like rats kellar litterally meaning council cellar or bar under the city council hall and started in the 19th century german towns. We have a longer story on our website at:

Steampunks are invading the "Antique Autos in History Park" event!

Antique Autos in History Park
Sunday Sept 13, 2009
Noon till 5:00pm
1600 Senter Rd San Jose, CA 95112
Cost: FREE!

We're using this event to get our Steampunk gear on, gather together and enjoy a day in the park. We'll be taking a break to enjoy a potluck picnic lunch at around 2:00ish. Bring your picnic gear, something to share and a beverage (alcohol is not allowed in the park) and we'll gather on the lawn of the Hill House (the Hill House is located directly across from the Fire House). There MAY be picnic tables available, but plan to either bring your own chair, or sit upon the grass... we're steamPUNKS so grass won't hurt us ey?

History park is a fabulous place for photos, so bring your cameras.

There's a fantastic Trolly barn chock full of steam powered cars & engines, O'Brien's Sweet shop, and plenty of house museums to browse... oh, and the park will be full of antique cars!

Antique Autos in History Park Description:

The 9th Annual Antique Autos in History Park presented by the Santa Clara Valley Model T Ford Club and History San Jose will take place on Sunday, September 13 from noon to 5:00 PM. This event fills History Park (Kelley Park, 1650 Senter Road, San Jose, CA) with antique autos, fire equipment, bicycles and motorcycles of all makes from the 1900 to 1945. Also located on the grounds will be early day gas engines which will power saws, washing machines and other tools needed in the early days. Activities are provided for kids of all ages. This year, members of the Model T Club will again attempt to assembly a Model T in less than 6 minutes. The event is free to everyone.

Greetings!

My years at Spikes showed me how awesomely fun it can be to give the gift of libation and entertainment to the burner community. And so, the lovely Armadillo Puttanesca and your own Red Furry Beast take great pleasure in announcing Ludo O'Dillo's Publick House and Celtic Cinema!

Imagine walking along the playa, and suddenly coming upon a traditional Irish pub. Step through the red door and enter a 600 sqare foot establishment. (Yes, we are a wee bit bigger than Spike's!) Belly up to the bar for a cold draught, a shot of whiskey or an Irish coffee. Then take a seat on the sofa, and warm yourself by the fireplace. Maybe a nice game of darts? Or enjoy one of the many Celtic Cinematic classics on our projection screen.

We debuted at Playa Del Fuego last fall, and will be back Bigger and better than ever this Memorial Day weekend. Look for us on the playa in August! We will be unplaced, but we'll let you know where we are one way or another.

We even have our own website - www.ludoodillo.com. There you can see photos, our schedule (5 burns this season! Whew!) and much more. As you know, running a camp like this is an expensive undertaking. If you would care to support our obsession... Burners and Mental Health

For those of you close to Shooter--and anyone else who is close to a Burner or Burners that struggle with issues of depression or other challenges of that nature--or for those who struggle with these issues themselves:

A good friend has started a Tribe called Radical Life Institute--as a place to discuss mental health and the Burner community. It looks like it could be a good place for open dialog on this issue. Having had a brother with schizophrenia, I am an advocate of mental health education. We have a wonderful, wacky, diverse community with our fellow Burners--and due to its very nature of attracting folks who often "live on the edge," it behooves all of us to understand how to help our friends in the community when these sort of issues arise in our friendships, or when we face them ourselves.

I encourage you to join--and contribute to an open dialog on this very vital subject.

SAN FRANCISCO – An amateur pyrotechnician was arrested by police last weekend after staging an impromptu fire show in the Sunset District during the early morning hours.
At 3 a.m. on Saturday at the 800 block of Judah Street, police found a 31-year-old man standing on the top of a pickup truck while wielding a homemade flamethrower that was shooting balls of fire four feet into the air, according to Capt. Paul Chignell of the Taraval Police Station.

The man had obtained a couple of cylindrical tanks, possibly containing propane, and connected them with hoses to a metal outlet that directed the flames, Chignell said. Each time the man pulled the device’s trigger, a spout of fire would erupt.

“This guy had a yellow fireman’s jacket on and was just randomly shooting flames into the air,” Chignell said.

Neighbors frightened by the display called the police, who arrested the man on counts of wielding an explosive device on a public street and possessing a flammable device with intent to maliciously use it, Chignell said.

The man offered up no explanation for what he was doing, said Chignell. No one was injured in the incident, but Chignell said the suspect’s bizarre behavior put a lot of nearby residents at risk.

“Obviously, the potential for damage is pretty incredible with a rigging like this,” said Chignell. “Sometimes you just have to wonder what some people are thinking.”

Tearing Down the crypt

We've been talking about this on the google group, but i thought i'd post it here in hopes of getting a couple more people to help.

This is this weekend, at NIMBY. We need to get the structure down and prepped for moving. I am hoping to get 5-6 people per day to help so that nobody dies. Sunday will be the safety 3rd day...

OK, here is the plan.

Saturday 2ish til dark Move everything out of the crypt, and then
start tearing the shelves down

Sunday Noon - dark Make the crypt go away.

If you have anything in there, and want it, you need to come pick it
up early on saturday, as everything that goes in the container that is
locked up til the crypt gets set back up...

So far it looks like Zak, diter, dougie, Stella, and I are into the
insanity. Anyone else available for this schedule?

Annual Plea for Funds

Well, we haven't done very many fundraisers this year, and that is pretty evident by the amount of cash we have in the bank right now. we reduced our overall bottom line by purchasing containers last year, but is still costs almost $7K to run for a week on the playa.

Any Donations would be GREATLY appreciated, and would help lower the stress on the already broke and stressed out PTB.

"We want our campmates to be open and to enjoy any and all sex you may have at Burning Man! However, every year there are incidences of sexual assault on the playa and we want our beloved camp mates to be safe! So, even though it's an awkward subject, we would like to briefly talk about sex and what behavior we expect from all of our camp members. To promote this awareness, the Bureau of Erotic Discourse has asked up to endorse the following guidelines for safe sexual adventures:

#1 Always ask before touching, even if you know them! It's polite, it's good manners, it will earn their respect.

#2 Respect your partner's desires and boundaries. How do you find them out? ASK! Again, it's fun and sexy to find out a little about your partner before diving in.

#3 Do not have sex with an intoxicated or stoned person... not only is it technically against the law, but it is potentially very hurtful to that person. And what fun it that??? If you have made a sober pre-agreement with a partner and go get fucked up, thats cool... but do not pick up a drunk, high hottie and take advantage! Be smart, take care of your partner, cover your butt, get sober ... then get some conscious luvin'.

#4 Card your partner... OK, maybe that's exaggerating but please make sure your potential partner is of age. There are some darn hot underage peeps old out there, so be aware! Again, we don't want anyone hurt out there.

#5 If you hear or see one of our campmates in trouble, step in and ask if they need help! We would like it if you did this with anyone out there, but we absolutely expect it with our theme camp family. We take care of each other! In addition, consider buddying up when you go out for the evening. Guys watch out for the women, and vice versa! We do not want any of our family member assaulted this year.

#6 If, god forbid, someone does get assaulted or feels threatened in any way, we want you to know right now that we support everyone here! No matter how it went down- tell us. There are amazing services available both at the Ranger Stations, Medical Tents and Emergency Services. We will go with you, we will hold your hand, we will take care of you. We are running low on slow setting Alginate but I found a bunch of tooth shade and monomer. I think I have the slow setting stuff down to 5 minutes but you still gag for the whole time. I even puked once on one of my test runs, so no promises on the fun.

From San Jose- (45 minutes- 1 hour depending on traffic)
Hywy17 south (20ish miles) towards Santa Cruz.
Exit Mt. Hermon rd. in Scotts Valley. Go right at 1st light.

If you want to come down the coast from the City, there is a super cool back way! should take about an hour and a 1/2.
Take Hywy 1 South, just past the mini town of Daven port,

Plague needs help moving on Sunday june 1st

Hey everyone I am moving again this time from one side of Oakland to the other.
So I am renting a truck and I would love it if anyone could help me out.
I hear BEER will be served in the new back yard when we are all done

I have rented a big 16 foot truck(not ridiculously big) - see special note at end about this
What I am moving
1. 3 maybe 4 dressers(how did I get so many)
2. 3 book shelves
3. 2 beds - 1 box spring
4. 1 table
5. 1 cat
I think the rest of the stuff will be moved before than as I have a storage unit and I keep filling it up so that the move will just be the big stuff.
First the GOOD NEWS - I currently live on the 1st floor with 1 set of stairs down(easy)
Now the BAD NEWS - I am moving to the 3rd floor

So the plan is to pick up the truck(in the morning)
Load the crap mentioned above(morning to early afternoon)
Drive to the new place - 5 miles away
Drop off probably 1/2 of the above - what will fit and I know we are keeping
Drive to the storage unit another 5 miles
Drop the rest to sell on Craigslist later - Unless you need a dresser NOW - cuz I got one and it is a Perty Colour
Return Truck
DRINK BEER

Special note about the truck rental
Oh one other thing is needed - A person with a valid drivers license. I have one but some punk in Oakland is probably pretending to be a 6 foot white guy as we speak(my bag was stolen from my car last weekend - Don't be a Dumb Ass in West Oakland While Drinking your Juice in the Hood)

Blood Vessel Woes

I've not been asked to post this - I also want to keep all names out of this post, however, many of you will already know the parties involved - please respect my wishes to KEEP NAMES OUT OF THIS. I dont want this to be taken as a negative toward anyone, it truly is not meant to be, I can see each side's reasons for what they're doing. This is a call to save the Blood Vessel, nothing more; I'm friends with everyone involved and wish to remain such... I merely wish to save our art car from being sold off.

The extremely condensed back-story as I know it: the BV was purchased and rebuilt as a partnership vehicle - two friends came together to see her come to reality. She needed a lot of attention, time, and money to rebuild and modify. Those things were put in to each persons level of ability. However, joint ownership is not always an easy venture. Lets just suffice it to say that this one has suffered a few hardships, and to keep the peace after BM07 the joint owners decided to split ways in regards to this project.

Well, that brings us to the here and now - retaining-owner needs to pay off leaving-owner for their portion of the investments. Retaining-owner currently does not have the necessary funds to pay this debt; I'd put up the money, IF I had it, but the sad fact is that I dont. We're not talking a ton of money here, but a substantial enough amount that it's now to the point of we either find a source for the funds, or we're going to have to sell the BV to pay off the debt. I really dont want to see that happen, so I'm turning to my friends, my community and asking for your assistance..... if you'd like to continue to see the BV on the playa, we need financial assistance, and the sooner the better. If leaving-owner can be paid off, we'll be able to move forward with plans for the BV; if not, well, the BV as we know it will be put up for sale.

Time once again for the monthly burner weekend at Lupin! This month there will Cinco de Mayo activities including a pinata, fizzball, and a May Pole/Beltaine celebration! Theme camps, DJs and burners from Monterey, Santa Cruz and the South Bay always make this a don't-miss event.

Drumming Circle
Start off this fun filled celebration by participating in a drumming circle by the waterfall. Bring your percussion instruments at 7:00 and drum up some energy. Then, on Saturday, bring flowers, ribbons, and other decorations to make your May Crown at 12:00 noon. Wear your creation to the Beltane Festival at 2:00 PM on the upper lawn. We'll dance the rites of Spring around the Maypole. All ages are welcome to join in.

Afterwards,continue the party at the Cinco de Mayo mixer party outside NuDome at 6:00 PM.

Here are ways you can Encourage your Kids/People
to go green during Earth Day.

Reduce electricity
Explain to your children that lights, computers, televisions and furnaces use energy, and that energy is in short supply. Jessica Altman of Buffalo, NY, encourages her 3-year-old to always flip off the light when she leaves a room and shut off the TV when she’s no longer watching.

Now the toddler even reminds others: “Turn off the light!”

Appliances like DVD players use energy even when off, so cutting the power totally is the only way to conserve. Go shopping together to buy power bars and plug your electronics into them (watch little ones closely so there are no shocks).

Take small steps
There are dozens of small things your kids can do every day to save energy and keep the world cleaner and greener.

Your kids can:

Shut off the water when they brush their teeth
Walk, ride a bike or take the bus instead of traveling by car
Take faster showers or baths in just a small amount of water
Help hang clothes on the line instead of putting them in the dryer
Choose products that are not over packaged

Recycle
Explain to your kids that every bottle and can they use is waste that just sits in a big pile at the local dump if we don’t recycle. Get them involved by making it their job to sort recyclables and take them out for pickup. (Remind them to watch out for broken glass and ask for help if this happens.) If there’s no recycling collection in your area, find out where you can drop off items.

Consider recycled crafts too.

Compost
It’s easy to collect your own food scraps and garden waste and turn it into healthy compost in your own yard. Children can help buy a composter (they’re sold at home reno stores and sometimes through municipalities), and, like Altman’s young daughter, fill it with kitchen scraps and garden waste on a daily basis and even help stir it to get things breaking down. And, in a few months when you’ve got compost, they can take part in spreading it over the garden and seeing how “garbage” can become rich dark dirt to make a garden grow.

Do a donation tour
A great way to get across the message of "reuse" and "recycle" is to take kids on a trip to your local thrift store, recycling center, or church. If your children have old clothing, toys, shoes, or other items in reusable condition, make a family trip down to the donation center so they can see how their trash is someone else's treasure. Teach kids how items can be reused for different purposes--for example old towels, blankets, and comforters can often be donated to local animal shelters for bedding. These real-life examples will teach kids that many items they would normally throw away can actually have a second life.

Write a letter
Fifteen years ago, 9-year-old Melissa Poe of Nashville saw a TV show about pollution. Horrified by the problem, she wrote a letter to the president that suggested he “get on TV and put up big signs” to make people aware of the problem. She also founded Kids FACE, an environmental organization for young people. Your children can write letters to government leaders and corporations about pollution and other environmental issues, and you can give them a hand in looking up addresses and help them decide what they’re going to write. Talk about how you live in a democracy and every voice counts, no matter how small.

Make a reusable bag
One of the first projects Poe and her friends did as pat of Kids FACE was to make fun bags for grocery shopping. Plastic shopping bas are a big garbage problem -- it takes 1,000 years for a bag to break down! Here’s how: Have your kids help you choose some heavy fabric and sew it into simple rectangular bags with handles. Or, buy some canvas bags at a craft or environmentally friendly gift shop. Then use fabric pens to draw pictures on them. (Check out our Canvas Grocery Tote bag craft for detailed instructions.) Take the bags out with you every time you shop.

Do a project
If your child has an independent research project coming up at school, suggest she tackle an environmental issue like pollution, garbage or energy.

Enjoy the earth
Kids have to love the world to want to protect it. So take nature walks and look at the trees, flowers and sky. When you’re away on vacation, don’t forget to enjoy the local natural environment, not just the tourist sites. Encourage them to take pictures, draw pictures, read books and write stories about the world and its beauty.

Talk about it
“We focus on just being aware,” says Altman. She often talks to her daughter about birds, plants, gas-guzzling vehicles and energy use. Indeed, just asking your children to shut off the lights and reuse plastic bags is not enough -- they must understand why we’re doing these things and what impact they might have.

The Den of Iniquity returns to Lupin April 4-6..

SO we're going to put on the Den of Iniquity at Lupin April 4-6 and would love to invite any and all of you Spike's folks to come join us that weekend. It's a great place full of burners and we'd love to see more of you out there.

Lupin is a naturalist resort with hot tubs, an amazing pool, tons of trails and hiking, oh, and that weekend a bunch of theme camps and burners! There's going to be the usual Fire spinning and likely burned art, and just a bunch of cool poeple.

Again, it's free if you volunteer 5 hours during or before the weekend, or $72 otherwise for the full weekend, or cheaper for just one night.

Hey all~

I've not seen any SVB events on the horizon but wanted to put this idea out and see if there's any interest. One of my roomates gave me a bag of vampire books and a print, as possible items for a silent or blind auction at a Spikes event. I've not run such a thing, but an event at Edges had $1 raffle tickets people could buy and drop into jars for each item, then they were all raffled off.

Just wanted to invite you all to the lupin Burn happening Feb 29th to Mar 2nd at Lupin Lodge in Los Gatos. Best part is, the weekend is FREE if you volunteer for 5 hours either before or during the event or $72 for three days of partying if you want to just lay around and enjoy the hot tubs and the rest of this cool place. (and the volunteering can include such strenuous tasks as keeping an eye on the fire pit, working the front desk greeting and checking people in, etc. It's not a labor camp or anything...)

Hi folks, I'm a long-time fan of Spikes, and one of the founders your neighbors, The Mind Shaft Society.

This year my sweetie Roxie and I are organizing a project called The Flamethrower Shooting Gallery which is a "county fair" style shooting gallery with four small flamethrowers and cardboard targets - 2-foot high versions of The Man, and maybe other shapes.

I'm posting here because there might be some opportunity for collaboration - maybe the Shooting Gallery cuold have a tournament and offer a lap-dance at Spikes as a prize/ Or maybe Spikes could give away "Flamethrower Shooting Lesson" certificates to the best dancers, etc. We (the shooting gallery) would give the winners private lessons in Flamethrowing out at the range.

I have also approached The Crucible about previewing the shooting gallery at this years' Fire Arts Festival, where maybe we could do something with Spikes if that works out.

I do have a Flamethrower Permit from the state of California, so I can legally posses the devices here in California (I am based in SF) but any use in California needs to comply with local fire regulations.

Anyway, there are lots of possibilities and i just thought I'd post here to explore them.

I'm in the process of filling out an Art Questionnaire for the BM org and and generally soliciting input, ideas for collaboration, etc. So, let me know what you think.

Hello fellow Theme Camp organizers.

The Rue Morgue and Temple of Community would like to offer you a challenge of a different ilk. Lets see your art somewhere else. VvvvV

When we found out that Best wasn't doing a temple this year we started to embark on creating one for the community that each camp could be part of.

We are building a 20 - 30 foot origami crane from wood to burn. It will a place of mourning, deep thought and release. To say goodbye to loved ones that have left this world.

We are asking various camps to build their own 5 foot version that can be placed next to the main structure in a circle to show that no mater how different we are together we are a community.

We will be happy to send you scaled down drawings but in the end its your art piece and we'd like you to make it yours. Use the skeleton as a base.

Any chance in the future Spike's can have a live DJ setup? I know there is not much room in the dome. So how about this. Can you take a few bars out of the doom like for a door. Make some sort closet structure on the outside where the opening is and use that as a DJ booth?

I miss all you guys soooooo much!!! Blame it on the bottle of red wine if you will, but I've been reading through old blogs. Blogs from my first RWB, post BM blogs, SF roadtrip blogs, I am so happy to relive the memories but so sad to have not seen you guys for so long! I feel as though I have relived the last 4 years of my life. Spike's was an integral part of it. Museness, Spike, Raven, Rodent, everyone else. All of you guys hold a ridiculous place in my heart.

Nimby cleanup on wednesday evening

Snook just gave me a call. He's got the fire marshal doing a walkthrough on Thursday, and he has requested that we do a bit of cleanup to our area.

Have some free time this weekend? Holiday set-up is going on big-time at NIMBY and we could really use your help.

*Saturday the giant Parachute is being put up and many-a-peoples are needed to help with that.

*Sunday evening 200 Christmas Trees are being delivered and need to be unloaded and (if time allows) get set in stands.

*Extra decorations? If you have holiday decorations you don't use anymore or would simply like to donate, let me know. Decorating 200 trees is going to be a tough job!

So a while back I bought the kit from Monster Makers, and it rocks by the way. But then a few months later I noticed my credit card was getting monthly charges to some dating site I never heard of. And the charges started about a month or two after buying the stuff on line. And I never use that card online but it was easy enough to report the fraud and have a new card and number issued. Then I needed some more stuff. So this time, right before BRC07, I made my purchase with a card I hadn't used in over a year and had a $0 balance on it. And what do you know, the card company called last month saying they suspected someone was trying to do some fraudulent charges. Something like Paypal and AT&T where trying to preapp a $1 charge to see if my account works. That card company rocks, but I am now concerned about the security and integrity of the monster makers site? Do the math this was a couple months after the purchase. Anyone else have this coincidence repeatedly happen to them?
